Gales Creek Cemetery is located Soda Springs Road southeast of the community of Gales Creek. The first know burial is that of Nancy (Sutton) McCoy. Nancy was born March 3, 1844 the daughter of Isaac Hopwood & Elizabeth (Hullibarger) Sutton and married John McCoy, son of Moses, Sr. & Charity (Dunn) McCoy, Sep 26, 1860 in Guthrie County, Iowa. John and Nancy McCoy came to Oregon in 1863 with John's brother Moses, Jr. and several other family members. Nancy died February 13, 1872 and was buried on a portion of the John McCoy property which later became known as Gales Creek Cemetery.
