My gr-gr-grandfather, James Miller Allen,
reportedly built the first grist mill in
Prineville sometime
around 1871. He had immigrated from Missouri.
to Polk Co., Oregon, as sargeant on the 1845
"Military
Immigrant" wagontrain -also known as
the "Blue Bucket Gold Train. In 1860
he married the widow, Sarah E.
Butler, and in 1871 they moved their family
to the Prineville area from Monmouth, OR.
James M. Allen was
a miller by trade - later he also built a
grist mill in the Boyd area. Elam E. Allen,
son of James &
Sarah Allen, wrote a poem titled "Pioneer
Mill" about the grist mill his father
built along the Crooked
River; I believe that poem is in some of
the publications put out by the Crook Co.

Isaac N MOORE and Emma M GRENGER MOORE moved
to Prineville from Antelope OR area about
1882 or 83. They
are located on the 1900 census. I would like
to find out more about them. I believe they
had several children--the only
one I know the name of was their first--Paul
MOORE b Feb 1893 in Prineville. I have no
further information. Any clues

Samuel Dunne Mustard, William Glen Mustard, early Crook County residents. "SD" was one of the original potato growers in Powell Butte. Around 1900. My Dad, Archie C. Mustard, son of William Glen, was born in Powell Butte in 1910 and spent his life there, raising "spuds," alfalfa, and registered beef shorthorn cattle.

My KING genealogy goes like this. Lyman King married Phebe Williams and can be found in the 1840 and 1850 census- McHenry County, Illinois. They had 8 children. One of them was Augustus Clifford KING (my relative) who was born on 12/08/1828 in N.Y. and died 04/06/1900 Linn County, Or. He lived in Crawfordsville. He came out on the wagon train in 1853 and married Lydia Jane McDowell. Their son is David +Warren KING who married Rutha Belle Wright. We have lots of KING relatives who are their sisters/brothers & who lived in Prineville and are buried in Juniper Haven Cemetery. I have lots of info on the KINGS if you +are related and would like to exchange pictures/letters/info. THANKS!

I don't need a "people" look-up, but I would like some information if you run across any, regarding what may have been going on in the 1920s and 1930s in Prineville. I had two in our family data that came to Prineville during probably the late 1920sor mid 1930s to work for a while. One was killed in a logging accident family lore says, the other would come home periodically, but would go back and work some more. I am to understand it was something about timber or logging. It could have been oil field work. They both lived in Smithville, Oklahoma at the time. Just curious. I know at those times men would often go away to work and leave their families, because there was no money and they couldn't afford to travel with a family, but a man alone could sleep and travel almost anyway or anywhere to find work to earn money for his family.

My Grandfather, Alfred Bennet Carey, was born at his parents house on Ochoco Creek in 1878. I found the family listed in the 1880 census. His parents were Charles W. Carey and Catherine (or Katherine) Webdell. "Kate" as Catherine was known in the family, was the niece of Anthony Webdell, who, according to Thunder Over The Ochocos, was in Crook County before the people who established the town of Prineville arrived. My uncle, Wayne Carey, told me that Anthony trapped for furs in the area before the first settlers arrived, and spoke the language of the Native Americans who lived in the area. Alfred Bennet Carey married Bertha Smith, whose maiden name was Yancey. Bertha Smith's father, Albert E. Smith, according to my father and my uncle, drove a freight wagon for a living. The freight company in Prineville was owned by Yanceys.

was my uncle on my father's side. My dad
was Virgil Homer Long who died in 1976 in
Georgia.they came from a large family of
