After a brief illness Mrs. Mehala Stone died on January 27th,
and was laid to rest in the cemetery at Cherryville on Sunday
afternoon.
Mehala Hannahs was born on June 5, 1831, in Ohio. She was married
to Elijah Stone in 1861 in Shelby County, Missouri. They
crossed the plains by ox-team in 1862 and lived in Oregon seven
years.
They then moved to California, but returned to Oregon in the
Fall of '73 and later settled on the present homestead near
Cherryville.
Mrs. Stone was the mother of seven children, six of whom survive
her. The husband died in 1879 at the age of 78 years. |

Mrs. Mahala Stone, who died recently at her home near Cherryville
on the Mount Hood wagon road, was a pioneer of 1862. She was
born June 5, 1830, in Ohio, was married to Elijah Stone in 1861, and crossed
the plains to Oregon in 1863. After remaining in Oregon
seven years they removed to California, but returned to Oregon in 1872. They
then settled on a homestead near Cherryville, where they
lived until 1879 when Mr. Stone died at the age of 78 years. Mrs. Stone is survived
by six children. |
