"Host of Friends Mourn Death of Pioneer and Educator"
Oregon City, Or., Dec. 19

The lamentable news was received today of the death last Saturday at his home in Victoria, B. C., of Professor S. D. Pope, 60
years old, for many years a prominent educator in the schools of this city.

Professor Pope was born in Canada and graduated from Queen's College, Kingston, at the age of 19 years. He taught for a short
time in his home province, and came to Oregon City in the late '60's. He taught for three months at Canemah, and then took up
the work in the Oregon City Seminary, at that time a city school standing where the Barclay does now. He taught in the city
schools for many years, but later was instructor in a private school.

In the '70's Professor Pope moved to Victoria, B. C., where he taught for many years, and where he resided at the time of his
death. After a successful career in the schools of Victoria, he was made Superintendent of Education for the Province of British
Columbia, but at the time of his death he was teaching in a girls' school at Victoria.

While living in Oregon City he was married to Miss Lottie Buck, a daughter of W. W. Buck, a pioneer. He leaves a wife and six
children.

Professor Pope was regarded as a wonderful educator, and his friends include a host of former pupils in this city and
Victoria. Professor Pope was early given the degrees of A.M and B.A., and while teaching at Victoria his alma mater conferred
upon him the degree of LL.D.

The funeral was held from his late home, Victoria, Monday at 3 pm.
