Charles Nelson, a pioneer barber of Portland, died yesterday
at his home at Gladstone, after an illness of more than a year's
duration. He was 67 years of age. He was well known among older
residents of Portland, his first shop here being on First
street in the early '70's. He afterwards opened the Merchants and
International Hotel shops when that part of the city was in
its prime. He also conducted the Russ House shop in San Francisco.
Mr. Nelson was a veteran of the Indian wars, serving in the regular
Army. He was one of the men who defended the historical
Stoneman Grade in Arizona in 1869 during an Apache raid and was
a member of the troop that ran down Captain Jack in the lava beds
in Southern Oregon. He is survived by a widow and one son. |
