Mrs. Eugenie Meldrum, wife of Henry E. Meldrum, ex-Surveyor-General
of Oregon, who died Saturday, was the only living daughter
of the late Eugene and Mary La Forest, prominent pioneers, having
been born and reared in this city. Before her marriage she
held a position in the public schools of this city. She was a member
of St. Paul's Church, also of St. Paul's Guild. She was a
past worthy matron of Pioneer Chapter No. 28, O.E.S., being a charter
member of this organization.
Mrs. Meldrum was always prominent in public affairs, and was
ever ready to lend a helping hand. During the Spanish War she
was a member of the Women's Auxiliary to the W.R.C., and it was
partly through her untiring efforts that the reception tendered
to the returning soldier boys was such a marked success. Mrs. Meldrum
was endeared by all who knew her through her fine
character and kindly nature and stood ever ready to lend a helping
hand to those in need. She was a most loving wife and mother,
and devoted her mother, Mrs. Mary La Forest; a husband, Henry E.
Meldrum; three brothers, Eugene La Forest, of Portland; Emil La
Forest, of San Francisco, and Oscar La Forest, of Alaska; five
children, Don E. Meldrum, of this city; Mrs. Harley C. Stevens,
Jr., of Portland; Joseph Meldrum, of San Francisco; Mary Belle
Meldrum, of Moscow, Idaho, and John Meldrum, Jr., of Portland. |
