Arthur Mather, Oregon settler of 1879, died at his home at Clackamas,
January 20, from ailments due to advanced age. The
funeral was held from the Clackamas Congregational church last Thursday
afternoon, Rev. E. C. Smith officiating.
Mr. Mather was born at Nether Place, Newton Mearns, Scotland,
December 25, 1849, and came to the United States in 1873. He
moved to Oregon in 1879 and had lived at Clackamas practically
since he came to this state. He was for many years postmaster and
Southern Pacific agent at Clackamas, and had held numerous public
offices during his residence there. He was especially
interested in educational work and served for many years as school
director.
Mr. Mather is survived by his widow and one son, Arthur G. Mather,
three daughters, Miss Agnes Mather, Mrs. W. W. Foster and
Mrs. R. W. Piper. Other relatives include two sisters, Mrs. John
Snodgrass and Mrs. William Rodgers, a brother, Alexander C.
Mather of Scotland, and a granddaughter, Miss Margaret Piper. |
