"Oregon City Couple Wed for 50 Years"
Oregon City, Or., March 18

Two of Oregon City's best-known residents Wednesday will celebrate the golden anniversary of their marriage. They are Mr. and
Mrs. William H. Howell, who were married in this city March 22, 1883, by Rev. E. Gerry, Congregational minister. For 40 years
they have lived at 308 Jefferson street.

Mrs. Howell, whose maiden name was Lizzie C. Bitzer, was born in Santa Clara, Cal, October 24, 1860. With her parents she
came to Oregon on the coastwise steamer oriflamme, landing in Portland on Christmas day, 1870. The next day, by river steamer,
the Bitzer family came to Oregon City. Lizzie attended the Oregon City seminary, after receiving considerable schooling in San
Francisco.

Mr. Howell, who for 34 years was superintendent of the Oregon City water works, is a native of Canemah, born November 20,
1861. His father, the late Josiah Howell, died in 1912 at the age of 83. Mr. Howell attended the Canemah school and Oregon City
seminary before taking a job with Pope & co., which then had management of the city water works. For 11 years Mr. Howell was
fire chief at the Hawley Pulp & Paper company, retiring a few years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Howell are charter members of Willamette Rebekah lodge, No. 2. Mrs. Howell was for 24 years on the governors'
board of the Odd Fellows' home in Portland, serving 20 years as treasurer of the board. She was president of the Rebekah
assembly of Oregon for two terms, from 1903 until 1905, and is one of the best-known Rebekahs in the state. Mr. Howell has been
a member of Oregon Odd Fellows lodge, No. 3, since 1888.
